❝ This Tosca in concert format was a triumph … A spectacular and memorable evening, with the added challenge of a very strong wind, which the artists bravely overcame … Outstanding performances delivered by the singers … Roberto Alagna was remarkable… He exudes charisma, charm, and a brilliant smile, maintaining his wonderful voice ❞
“What a performance to play and sing with this crazy wind! A perfect evening (as usual) at @choregies with this year: TOSCA! In a concert version, and what I can tell you, @aleksandra_kurzak is not only an excellent singer, she is also an extraordinary actress! @robertoalagna.tenor is a bit at home in Orange, the audience is already won over before seeing his silhouette on stage, rightly so, what charisma, what a smile, what a voice!”
« This year’s production of Tosca was presented in a concert format, marking the closing night of the 2024 season at the Chorégies d’Orange. It was a memorable evening, as always, with the added challenge of a very strong wind, which the artists bravely overcame. Watching Roberto Alagna perform in his element is always an event, and despite the difficult weather conditions, the evening was spectacular.
First and foremost, Aleksandra Kurzak deserves applause for her incredible performance. Beyond her well-established vocal talents, she demonstrated superb acting skills. Holding the role of Tosca on such a large stage, without any sets, must have been challenging, yet she managed it beautifully. Her aria “Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore” was undoubtedly the highlight of the evening, receiving prolonged and well-deserved acclaim for her deeply moving performance.
Roberto Alagna, as always, was remarkable. Performing alongside his wife Aleksandra Kurzak, their chemistry was palpable. Alagna exudes charisma, charm, and a brilliant smile, maintaining his wonderful voice. It is evident that he feels at home here, having performed at Orange for over a decade, and the audience adores him.
In conclusion, the 2024 closing night of the Chorégies d’Orange with Tosca in concert form was a triumph. Aleksandra Kurzak, Roberto Alagna, and Bryn Terfel delivered outstanding performances, making it an evening to remember. »
Interview
‘Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak sing Tosca: The emotion is stronger and stronger’. Read the CROSS INTERVIEW with Roberto and Aleksandra in today's edition of Le Dauphiné Libéré (Vaucluse Matin), interview by Alexandra Dejardin.
DL/VM: Roberto, in the 30 years that you've been a guest on stage at the Chorégies, is the emotion always the same, or is there a habit that sets in?
RA: ‘The emotion is even stronger and stronger. As you mature, you become even more sensitive. You meet people who have been following you for years [...] It's very moving to meet an audience that is there every year in the same place. That's what the Chorégies are for me. It's a meeting with the public, with friends, with family. ’
DL/VM: Aleksandra, at the Chorégies d'Orange, you took part in the Magic Night in the middle of Covid in front of an empty ancient theatre.
AK: ‘I'm really very happy, because I've never had the chance to sing in front of an audience at the Chorégies. This will be my first real Chorégies, with the fantastic audience of this region. ’
DL/VM: You released an album together called Puccini in Love, so finally it's a composer that brings you together?
AK: ‘Puccini is my favourite composer. I'm delighted to be able to make my real debut at the Chorégies in the year of Puccini. [...] Puccini's music is full of emotion. It doesn't always need to be staged because the music is already so rich.
RA: ‘Puccini has always been a composer who has accompanied me.I don't think I've done a season without performing a work by Puccini in my career.Recently, I even presented a concert-recital in which I sang all of Puccini's tenor roles in the same evening - it was fantastic!Puccini is an exceptional composer who takes us on an emotional journey through time and place.’
