❝ A SCORCHING Cav & Pag at Covent Garden … The BEST SINGING I’ve heard in this staging … A joy to hear Alagna’s GOLDEN TENOR ring out at Covent Garden again … A charming presence … A natural crowd-pleaser … His “Vesti la giubba” plumbed the tragic depths … GREAT CAST ❞

READ MORE (EXCERPTS): « A scorching Cav & Pag at Covent Garden […] It was the Alagnas who rode heroically to the rescue. Aleksandra Kurzak took on the roles of Santuzza and Nedda and Roberto Alagna sang Canio. […] This revival contains the best singing I’ve heard in this staging. […] It was a joy to hear Alagna’s golden tenor ring out at Covent Garden again. He has a charming presence and his Canio announced himself with such sunny bonhomie, a natural crowd-pleaser, that it made his descent into tortured clown even more painful. “Vesti la giubba” plumbed the tragic depths and he looked properly harrowed during the troupe’s performance when Michieletto takes us backstage where Canio is taunted by visions of his wife’s infidelity. […] With such a great cast, don’t hesitate to grab a ticket. Bachtrack Rate : 5 ⭐️»

❝ OUTSTANDING performances. Roberto Alagna’s tenor is BRILLIANTLY EXPANSIVE and hits some notable HEIGHTS❞

READ MORE (EXCERPTS): « Outstanding Performances Complement Brilliant Production in Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Before opening night, quite a few cast changes had to be made for various COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 related reasons, but no one could have been disappointed with the final line-up that emerged. Roberto Alagna’s own tenor is brilliantly expansive and hits some notable heights, as Alagna really makes Canio look like a totally lost and distraught being. »

❝ Miraculous substitutions, BRILLIANT CAST. FABULOUS SINGING AND ACTING from the soloists. Alagna’s interpretation of Vesti La Giubba - which demands immaculate vocals and can easily be over-dramatised - is bitterly sung and makes PERFECT SENSE ❞

READ MORE (EXCERPTS): « Two operas for the price of one at the Royal Opera House - These two operas followed each other with star substitutions as miraculous as a rabbit from a magician’s hat. What a treat we had in store: the first substitute for Pagliacci was Fabio Sartori, but he was also unwell and instead, Roberto Alagna, a name I would have travelled to see in the role, was on stage. The female leads too were substitutions with Polish Soprano Aleksandra Kurzak performing brilliantly to sing both Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana and Nedda in Pagliacci. Had it not been for the publicity covering the changes, I would have been writing about the brilliant casting. […] ‘Vesti La Giubba’ is a show-stopping aria which demands immaculate vocals and which can easily be over-dramatised. Alagna’s interpretation is bitterly sung and makes perfect sense of the following act where the actors on stage are mirroring real life. […] Last night’s productions pulled together some fabulous singing and acting from the soloists with a strong chorus and a charming children’s choir that offered as much dramatically as vocally. »

❝Roberto Alagna THRILLS AS CANIO… GORGEOUS rendition of ‘Vesti la Giubba’ … POWERFUL stage presence … Emotional DEPTH … FLUID vocalisation ❞

READ MORE (EXCERPTS): « Roberto Alagna thrills as Canio, a clown destroyed by the revelation of his wife’s infidelity. At the end of his gorgeous rendition of “Vesti la giubba”, the revolving stage sees him swallowed by darkness; it is almost as if his entire world is rejecting him. […] Both [Alagna and Baek] have powerful stage presences, layering their vocal performances with emotional depth. […] There is something mature and reflective with Alagna’s more fluid vocalisation. »
