Speaking about

IN THE 'DEUTSCHE OPER MAG' (dated March/July 2017) | Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak will gather on the stage of the Deutsche Oper Berlin on 23rd and 27th May 2017, for two performances of L'ELISIR D'AMORE. The score by Donizetti became the "symbol of love" of "the new emblematic pair of the international operatic stages". Michael Horst met Roberto Alagna last December as he was performing in Carmen there.

EXCERPT translated from German:

"[...] Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak will gather once again in L'elisir d'amore, the eternal and powerful love potion by Donizetti, which became a signature role for the couple Kurzak/Alagna - "our symbol of love", as the tenor called it, very poetic. In a run of performances of L'elisir in London in November 2012, the two singers met and fell in love, and three years later, between two performances of L'elisir in Paris, they make a return trip to Warsaw in Aleksandra's homeland to tie the knot for life. For Roberto, 52 years old now, the love potion is obviously also a potion of youth; So much so that the role of the young man Nemorino, who is consumed by love for the arrogant farmer Adina, suits him surprisingly and particularly well. "What's great about this role is that Nemorino is never ridiculous," says Alagna. Nevertheless, the difficulties must not be underestimated: Nemorino has a lot to sing, it requires a homogeneous tone at all times, with lyrical top notes.

Before their marriage their daughter Malèna came into this world in 2014. Last year Alagna dedicated an album to her, entitled with her first name: an incursion into the Italian popular music. What role did he sing most often, how many roles are still composing his repertoire, how often did he perform as Nemorino? Alagna sweeps this aside nonchalantly: "Sono Artista, non sono ragioniere" - "I am an artist, not an accountant". For all that, one should not refrain from having a look at the list of the lesser-known parts he also championed in his repertory, as for instance Vasco da Gama that the tenor sang for the first time in a new production at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2015, but also L'Amico Fritz by Mascagni, Francesca da Rimini by Riccardo Zandonai or Cyrano de Bergerac by Franco Alfano, the composer who completed Turandot, that Puccini left unfinished.

Polish Aleksandra Kurzak and French-Italian Roberto Alagna form the new emblematic pair of international operatic stages. A couple determined to sing together as often as possible: "When we do not sing together, we ruin our private life. "Indeed: when one sings here and the other there, they are separated for weeks and can only see each other via FaceTime. And they want to avoid that at all costs. [...]"

IN THE PRESS | Kurzak-Alagna - 'the love-couple' - appear soon in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore again, their operatic love potion! At the Deutsche Oper Berlin on 23rd and 27th May, 2017. READ the Berliner Morgenpost's paper ► https://www.morgenpost.de/flucht/article210377281/Keine-Kuesschen.html

EXCERPT: (translated from German)

"They met when performing "L'Elisir d'Amore" at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and since then they are always happy to return to Donizetti's comedy.

In the meantime, Roberto Alagna has ventured into the field of much heavier parts such as Eleazar in "La Juive" by Halévy, Canio in "Pagliacci", "Le Cid" by Massenet, or - at the Deutsche Oper Berlin - "Vasco da Gama " by Meyerbeer.

By her side, Aleksandra Kurzak, who grew up at the Staatsoper Hamburg, has also reached the top for a long time and caused a sensation in several Donizetti's works such as "La fille du régiment" in Vienna, "Maria Stuarda" in Paris and "Lucia di Lammermoor" in London. She is quite unrivaled in comical parts - and indeed gives full credibility to the love potion of charlatan Dulcamara by making it an authentic comedy far beyond a grotesque story of trickery. Natural actresses should enter the list of protected species, as they are so rare on opera stages today.

By the way, one can easily assume that true couples also give each other true kisses on opera stages. Anyway, with this luxury-cast, the staging by Irina Brook will be eminently ennobled."

Press Review

REVIEW | L'ELISIR D'AMORE at the Deutsche Oper Berlin | "In great vocal and scenic form, Alagna provokes the hilarity, admiration and emotion of the public" by Magdalena Grzybowska for Opera Lovers

EXCERPT (from Polish): "Roberto Alagna demonstrated he was excellent in this light-hearted belcantist comedy, 'The Elixir of Love'. The artist appeared in top vocal and scenic shape, performing with an energy that many of his younger colleagues might envy. The clumsinesses of his drunken Nemorino caused great hilarity from the audience. At one point he also arouse admiration for his acrobatics on stage and other comic gestures. But that's not all. Nemorino is gentle, passionate, shy, and sincerely in love with Adina. How could we fail to believe him when he exclaims that he would rather die as a soldier than live his life without his sweetheart! In the same way, Roberta Alagna gave such a high dose of emotion in the famous aria "Una furtiva lagrima" that he managed to move the spectators to tears. He get a huge ovation, but unfortunately the artist decided not to encore ... "

REVIEW | L'ELISIR D'AMORE at the Deutsche Oper Berlin | "An exceptional vocalist, a striking actor's performance, a captivating and impressive performance. A fantastic interaction with his partner Aleksandra Kurzak" by Renate Dahms for Operninfo Berlin.

EXCERPT (from German): "In the main parts, the artists' cast was the right one. The whole team appeared fully committed, joyful and enthusiastic on stage. As Nemorino: Roberto Alagna. With his wonderful tenor voice, he captivated the audience - rejoiced in advance and punctuating his arias with warm applause. In the meanwhile, he surprised with a striking actor's performance. Alagna is really an exceptional vocalist, successful all around the world. An impressive performance!

Aleksandra Kurzak was playing and singing Adina. This singer is a true win for opera world! She owns a splendid soprano voice, which she used brilliantly. A high level performance of the finest, very clean coloratura and a great technique. Besides, she demonstrates a very strong stage presence. An ideally suited model for this role!

Fantastic also was the interaction between Aleksandra Kurzak and her partner Roberto Alagna, her husband in life. Perhaps the chemistry of yesterday evening was especially great for this reason.
