PRESS REVIEW
ÔLYRIX - Voijin Jaglicic
"Vivid Italian colours from the moment he enters the stage, an interpretation that conveys emotion, a delicate and measured acting style, a median pitch that is both poised and nourished, powerful high notes, a scintillating and lyrical sound in the duet, a loving alchemy transposed into the characters and voices, a torrent of praise and acclamations for the artists.
"The lyrical couple Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak make their double debut at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège [...] The chosen programme is exclusively devoted to Puccini (partly based on the programme of the last album of this lyrical duo: Puccini in Love). This musical afternoon starts 'in medias res': from the outset in the musical dramaturgy of the Italian master, with the duet 'Mario, Mario' from Tosca. [...] Roberto Alagna displays his vivid Italian colours from the moment he enters the stage, accompanied by the applause of the audience. His performance conveys the emotion of the characters he portrays, supported by delicate and measured acting. The mid-range pitch is steady and nourished, fully exploited in the softly sung parts. The high notes are powerful but, particularly at the beginning of the second part, have slightly strained peaks. He fully recovers his voice and playing with "Parigi! È la città dei desideri" from La Rondine, a sonorous and suave ode to the French capital where the tenor will soon present his solo recital "Du Théâtre à l'Opéra" [...] The duets of the soloists immerse the audience in a scintillating and lyrical sound. The couple's love affair is transposed to the characters and voices. This Christmas-coloured concert ends with several encore performances, including two highlights from Puccini's repertoire ("O mio babbino caro" and "E lucevan le stelle") which are just right for the tessitura and sensitivity of each. After several Dziękuję! ("Thank you" in Polish) that echoed through the hall, the duo offered "L'Heure exquise" from The Merry Widow as a gift, each singing it in their own language. Roberto Alagna closes this lyrical afternoon with a Corsican a cappella song, rewarding a more than admiring audience who in return offer a torrent of praise and acclaim to the artists."
