"Alagna and Kurzak overcame the cold in Formentor: the pair of singers offered an outdoor recital in Mallorca and demonstrated all their professionalism against the elements"
"At Formentor Sunset Classics, the pair of singers faced harsh weather conditions. In addition to cool temperatures - ony 14° C and a cloudy sky - the wind was sweeping across the stage [...]
Roberto Alagna, wearing a three-piece suit, could better resist the cold but Aleksandra Kurzak, although trained at the Conservatory of music of the cold plain of Wroslaw (Poland), redoubled her merit by singing her arias barely covered with a light shawl thrown over her evening dresses. And yet, she was able to convey great warmth and emotion in her aria "Meine Lippen", an excerpt from Giuditta, Franz Lehár's opera. As well, she was able to perform her "Oh mio babbino caro" with an essential simplicity, an aria from Gianni Schichi (Puccini) added to the program.
Alagna was not outdone. Comfortable with his wife on stage, but obviously worried about seeing her getting freezed, he has shown a beautiful vocal complicity with Kurzak in La Traviata and Carmen, as well as a comic talent in the duet of L'Elisir d'Amore, holding a bottle of cognac. A very sweet moment. Trained in Parisian cabarets alongside street musicians, the self-taught and passionate singer has the qualities of a genuine "chameleon", more than sufficient to adapt to any situations.
As a result, he is able - with an equal credibility and ease - to slip into the skin of tragic lovers as the melodramatic Alfredo in La Traviata or Don Jose in Carmen, as well as into the shoes of Donizetti's comic character, or even into that of the "bolero singer" that best suits a traditional song such as Granada by Agustín Lara. Everything is perfectly functioning: remarkable phrasing and crystal-clear diction, whether in Italian, French, Spanish or we can suppose (impossible to judge for those who do not speak this language) also in Russian. [...]
This Thursday, the recital was given in the most difficult conditions of the short history of Formentor Sunset Classics. An opportunity to appreciate the best example of professionalism of two artists, required to fight against the coldness of the elements."
