Connessi all'Opera - Marco Cazzuffi - 23th of August 2024

Roberto Alagna delivers a scenically convincing and modern portrayal of Don José... Vocally, his nuanced expressiveness is striking and he remains powerful while depicting his passionate love... He conveys all the character's torments, which reach their peak in the aria 'La fleur que tu m'avais jetée,' warmly received by the audience

In the role of Carmen's lover, Roberto Alagna delivers a scenically convincing Don José, appreciated for his modern portrayal of the character’s moral decline, which is gradual yet irreversible. Vocally, his nuanced expressiveness is striking at the end of the duet with Micaëla in the first act; he remains powerful while depicting his passionate love for Carmen, and in the second act, he reveals all the character’s inner turmoil, reaching its peak in the aria 'La fleur que tu m'avais jetée,' warmly received by the audience. In the final duet, Alagna captures all the psychological nuances of his character, though sometimes with perhaps overly verismo accents. […] Overall, the performance, aesthetically pleasing, stays true to tradition, eliciting approval and enthusiasm from the audience. »
