About the vidéo

Some time after his triumphal first opera engagement with Glyndbourne, Alagna received a phone call on 2 January, inviting him to audition for John Mordler at the Opera de Monte Carlo, for the part of Alfredo, because the tenor who had been engaged to sing had withdrawn with a vocal problem. In his autobiography, Alagna describes the joy of leaving a gray and cold Clichy-Sous-Bois & arriving in Monaco - seeing the palm trees swaying in the wind - like a vacation from winter!  Here is a clip from what I believe is the first performance (very dark but sound is good) 17 January, 1989, with the distinguished Romanian soprano, Nelly Miricioiu as his Violetta.
