Roberto Alagna ahead of his performance in Monaco: "My desire is to satisfy the audience"
❝ Roberto Alagna is the centerpiece of the cast of the opera Adriana Lecouvreur which will be performed on Sunday, November 19 at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo to close Monaco's National Day. The tenor endorses the role of the Count of Saxony in the work by Francesco Cilea for the 2nd time in his career. Reached on the phone, he confides in an airy voice that he "always wakes up in a good mood". Between two rehearsal sessions, Roberto Alagna gives us a few minutes to talk about his comeback in the Principality. He wasn't involved in a production at the Opera Monte-Carlo for 5 years. This project delights Roberto Alagna, happy to return to this role: one of his favorites among those many who mark three decades of career that led him to the status of international opera star. ❞
EXCERPTS:
►"It's always interesting to portray a historical figure, even if the author has probably made him a more romantic hero than in actual fact. There is a duality by the Count of Saxony, a fallen prince, who enters a political game to win back his throne. As well as his love for actress Adriana Lecouvreur ... It's a fantastic work and the music is very beautiful, I must say that it's a pleasure to return to this role because I waited a long time for it in my career and I had a few missed opportunities. What is funny is that I was offered to perform it in Vienna, at the same time this year, but I had already signed for Monte Carlo."
►"Monte-Carlo is a place that I love, the last opera I played here is Cyrano, but I came back several times in Monaco to sing in other genres, so I'm happy to be back, this time , with an opera, and I can not wait to perform again before the audience! (laughs) It's always frustrating to sing in front of the empty room during the rehearsals, I believe we should more frequently allow people to attend the rehearsals, or why not to stream them online? The public would see the amount of work behind the preparation of a role . Some artists find it difficult to rehearse in front of a full room, personally, I find that the public brings an interesting adrenaline."
►"My desire is to satisfy the people who are listening to me now, I live the present moment, it is a philosophy that I apply every day because I have the feeling that we are forgetting the magic of the moment. I told it to my daughter Ornella, when she was very young: enjoy this day, because it will not come again."
►"Upcoming projects? I have plenty of ideas, running through my head. But it's complicated to deal with the schedules that are signed five years in advance My next project will be in duet with my wife, Aleksandra Kurzak, around great opera arias. As regards the opera roles, I would like to be chosen one day for Fedora. It is not new, I bought the score in 1988, while I was involved in the Pavarotti's competition. That said, I have been very privileged, I think I have had a lot of lucky moments in my career."
